McCarthy Talks 2020: ‘Biden Is The Jeb Bush Of This Election Cycle’

WASHINGTON — California Republican House Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy said at an Axios event Thursday that former Vice President Joe Biden is the “Jeb Bush of this election cycle.”

The House minority leader spoke at a Washington, D.C. Axios event with Axios’ Mike Allen about infrastructure, privacy and technology, and the prospect of former vice president Joe Biden winning the 2020 presidential election. Asked by Allen if he thought Biden could win, McCarthy said no.

“I think Biden, no disrespect, is the Jeb Bush of this cycle,” McCarthy said Thursday. “I think he has too much to apologize for…I think Bernie Sanders has a much better chance.”

Former Florida Republican Gov. Jeb Bush was an early favorite to win the 2016 GOP nomination, he dropped out of the contest early after losing in South Carolina. Bush articulated in March that he hopes someone runs against President Donald Trump in the 2020 election cycle in order to give Republican voters another choice.

“I think someone should run just because Republicans ought to be given a choice,” Bush said in an episode of CNN’s “The Axe Files.” “It’s hard to beat a sitting president, but to have a conversation about what it is to be a conservative — I think it’s important.”
